OAR and NESDIS team up to improve satellite-based data assimilation

A crucial aspect of forecasting and monitoring the Earth system is the process of combining observations with forecasts from weather and climate models, known as data assimilation. Data assimilation creates the best estimate of the state of the earth system, and can help identify model errors and create data sets for research. To help advance this process, on January 30, 2017, NOAA’s Climate Program Office (CPO) and the Joint Polar Satellite System (JPSS) met to discuss current and future data assimilation activities using JPSS products. This discussion was divided into two sessions. In the first session, the groups provided overviews of their programs and NOAA discussed its operational and research needs. The second session focused on JPSS’ Environmental Data Records Products and applications, as well as data assimilation efforts in disciplines such as the ocean, land, cryosphere, and atmosphere. Other participants and speakers included representatives from NESDIS, NWS Environmental Modeling Center, CPO programs, and two OAR laboratories (ESRL and GFDL). CPO’s Modeling, Analysis, Predictions, and Projections program and JPSS co-organized the meeting and will jointly publish a meeting summary and outcomes as a NOAA technical report.

Americans’ health, security and economic wellbeing are tied to climate and weather. Every day, we see communities grappling with environmental challenges due to unusual or extreme events related to climate and weather. In 2017, the United States experienced a record-tying 16 climate- and weather-related disasters where overall costs reached or exceeded $1 billion. Combined, these events claimed 362 lives, and had significant economic effects on the areas impacted, costing more than $306 billion. Businesses, policy leaders, resource managers and citizens are increasingly asking for information to help them address such challenges.
