Human Dimensions of Global Change Research (HDGCR)
The Human Dimensions of Global Change Research (HDGCR) program aims to improve our understanding of how social and economic systems are currently influenced by fluctuations in short-term climate (seasons to years), and how human behavior can be (or why it may not be) affected based on information about variability in the climate system. By illuminating institutional, economic, and cultural behavior, social science research on climate-human interactions plays a critical role in determining how humans currently prepare for and respond to climate variability and how analysis of these interactions could improve human welfare. The emphasis on shorter time scales allows the program to pursue the affinity between these time scales and the time horizon on which many climate-sensitive decisions are made. Moreover, lessons learned from analyzing how humans currently adjust to climate may have important implications for longer-term adaptation in the face of climate change.

Meetings and Events
- 11/18-20/2003, Insights and Tools for Adaptation: Learning from Climate Variability - The goal of this conference was to synthesize key adaptation lessons learned from NOAA-supported research and applications on interannual timescales and to explore the practical implications of these insights for climate change adaptation research, decision making, and development planning in the U.S. and overseas.
- 10/23-25/2002, HDGCR PI Meeting - summary of key insights gained at the meeting and suggestions made by those in attendance for the future direction of this program.
- 4/26-28/1999, NOAA Economics & Human Dimensions Investigators Meeting - provide a forum for researchers to share information and experiences, to demonstrate in concrete terms the value of NOAA human dimensions research in terms of advancing the knowledge base and improving societal welfare, and to identify specific future priorities for research.
